The 1830s were a time of serious religious conflict. Many people, especially the authors, had different opinions on how to find true spirituality. Ultimately, American authors created transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is a philosophical and literary movement that seeks individual truth through spiritual reflection, complete solitude, and a deep connection with nature. Since this has been established by the authors, many of them have written different pieces reflecting and using the beliefs of Transcendentalism. Ralph Waldo Emerson was considered the father of transcendentalism. He has written many influential pieces that follow and highlight major transcendental beliefs. Major beliefs include the oversoul, nature, and the senses. Besides these, there are minor beliefs and general ways of life. These beliefs were included in the Transcendental songs as a general way to share belief and create a movement. Because of the use of nature, the senses, and the oversoul as three fundamental transcendental beliefs, Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Nature" successfully explains the foundations of Transcendentalism. Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Nature" effectively uses the oversoul as a Transcendental belief to explain the relationship between humanity, nature, and God. The oversoul or divine soul is the soul that resides in everyone or everything. The transcendentalist believes that all life and the included parts of life are connected to an infinite capacity. Transcendentalists often link man to nature and nature to God. Emerson captures this concept by saying, "Standing on the bare earth, with head bathed in the crisp air and lifted into infinite space" (Emerson 3). Emerson begins his use of the oversoul by painting a picture of himself or… in the center of the card… nature, humanity and God. Transcendentalists firmly believe that nature is the only place where intercourse can be had closer with God. Using the belief of nature, Emerson was able to accentuate the importance and different parts of relationships, including nature. One of the most important beliefs is the belief of the senses which includes self-reflection and meditation. This is a core belief for Transcendentalism because it allows for individual truth. Overall, these connections and relationships are important because they are what Transcendentalism depends on. Without the support of these beliefs, Emerson would not be able to successfully write his concepts about individual truths due to the lack of support. Through the combination of the three main beliefs, Ralph Waldo Emerson was able to show the link between the different aspects of Transcendentalism.
