Between 1901 and 2000, the 20th century was a century of drastic changes and violence, as the first international wars involving countries around the world were fought in the First and Second World Wars. Advances in science and technology have led to a change in the way people live their daily lives compared to the 19th century. The 20th century was also the birth of words like nationalism and genocide. Coincidentally, it is in this century that most acts of nationalism and genocide took place. Nationalism is a strong concept and many people today, in the 21st century, are still learning and researching the effects and influence this idea has had and could have on a country and its people. Professor Vincent Barbarino of New York State College is one of these people. It calls attention to the fact that 2Nationalism can also lead to the loss of cultural nations through the process of expansion and assimilation. Nationalism can also become very extreme, leading to ultranationalism and racism as responsibility and commitment to one's own nation turns into views of antagonism and hostility towards other nations that may be perceived as a threat to one's own.
