Sigmund Freud's Theory in the Life of Pi Throughout my life I have always wondered what the conscious and unconscious mind is and why human beings act in ways different in different environments. The main theory used in the novel “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel is Freudian theory. The first reason why the Freudian mind plays an important role in the Life of Pi is because it shows that Pi will act differently in various situations and environments. Secondly, the Freudian mind shows us that the Id, the Ego and the Superego exist, which overcome Pi's psyche and change his behavior. Finally, Pi is consciously aware of everything that is happening, but the unconscious mind influences his personality and behavior without him even realizing it. Although Pi is a very humble and religious human being, the Freudian mind shows that even the most civilized individuals have a lewd side to their personality.
