Jane is constantly looking for closure when trying to talk to her husband "It's so hard for John about my case" (652). But John turns her around, belittles her thoughts, and calls her a weak, nervous little girl. He refers to her as his patient and not his wife and this builds bridges between the couple. Jane also reiterates her loneliness and desire for approval and acceptance from both societies “if I had less opposition and more society” (648). and her husband "is so disheartening not to have advice and company" (649). I firmly believe that if both parties were free of negative influences, their marriage, while not perfect, would have brilliant potential to thrive. Unfortunately, John got the better of himself by being the most powerful force, he used his power to humiliate his wife. Ultimately, this brought fear into their marriage and ends at great cost to John when he sees what has become of his wife
