Topic > Fergus M Craik's Levels of Processing Theory

Memory can be defined as the mental system for receiving, encoding, storing, organizing, altering, and retrieving information (Coon & Mitterer, 2012). Many times you can remember something, such as how to drive a car, but you cannot remember a mathematical formula for a test. People vary in their ability to remember certain things, and research has shown that even children differ in their memory abilities (Fagan & Singer, 1963). Psychologists have found that memory is not static, but rather is influenced to a large extent by internal factors and situational events (Huffman, Vernoy & Vernoy, 1997). This essay will attempt to find out which study method is most suitable by listing and explaining various memory strategies, as well as indicating how each method will improve memory efficiency. The memory process is composed of three operations. The first is Codification, or the conversion of information into a form that allows it to be stored in memory (Coon & Mitterer, 2012). The second operation is called Storage, i.e. the preservation of information until it is subsequently needed. The third and final operation is known as Retrieval and consists in recovering information from Storage (Hoeksema, Fredrickson, Loftus & Wagenaar, 2009). These previously mentioned operations each represent a phase in the memory process (Sternberg & Sternberg, 2012). There are different levels of information processing, these are called levels of processing theory (Goldstein, 2008). This theory was proposed by Fergus M. Craik, senior researcher at the Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest and Robert S. Lockhart, professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of To...... middle of paper ... . ..ence.
