Many compromises were created throughout the 1800s with the intent of uniting two nations to form a more perfect government. The North and the South have different views which have created many conflicts between the two parties. Congress continued to address contentious issues with compromises that benefited only one side or the other and not both. These compromises affected the North and the South; however they began to worsen drastically because both sides had economic, social and political differences. The North had an industrial economy and the South focused on an agricultural economy. This has created many problems as to what tariffs should be imposed. The South wanted tariffs imposed on agricultural products such as cotton, tobacco, etc. This contrasted with the North because they wanted tariffs imposed on manufactured goods to benefit the North's economy.
