The show I attended for concert criticism was a senior recital for Teresa Norton and Tracey Barnes. They played the violin and the piano respectively. The concert took place at Goranson Hall and I immediately felt a sense of closeness and intimacy due to the small size of the concert hall, which added sentimental value to such a special show. They played a total of three pieces, including Fritz Kreisler's Liebesleid, Terzetto in C major, Op. 74 for two violins and viola by Antonín Dvorák and the Sonata for violin and piano no. 17 in C major, K. 296 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Overall, I really enjoyed going to the concert and learning about the music department at Idaho State. The opening piece was called “Liebesleid” by Fritz Kreisler and was a rather short composition, which made a great introductory piece. The piece followed the musical styles of the late Romantic and early modern periods and was a duet with piano and violin. It seemed very light and had a melody that was very easy to follow and remember. The violinist used multiple techniques such as vibrato and double register. The piece is in ternary form and follows the ABA pattern. I think it was a homophonic texture with piano as accompaniment. The work began at a moderate pace, but once the "B" section began it slowed to an andante. The "A" section of the piece evokes a very lighthearted and youthful emotion, while the contrasting "B" section portrays much more painful feelings. The dynamics didn't vary much, but during the "B" section the dynamics decreased to a piano. The composition displayed a similar theme in each section, and I immediately noticed a theme reappearing. I really appreciated the simplicity of the Li...... middle of paper ...... h faster and had a cheerful tempo. The very short notes in the violin part made it seem light and more dance-like than the three. The violin and piano played together several times in unison. I found this movement the hardest to follow of the three because I didn't feel much of a recurring theme. The dynamics remained fairly constant between a mezzo piano and a mezzo forte. Overall, I think this composition did a fantastic job of showcasing the talents and abilities of both musicians without overshadowing each other. The senior recital I had the chance to attend was absolutely wonderful and I am so happy I had the opportunity to experience it. I would definitely recommend attending to anyone and supporting other ISU students. The musicians did a great job and it made me realize how much dedication and hard work goes into being a great musician.
