Introduction: Waste For Life, a non-profit organization composed of scientists, engineers, educators, architects, artists, designers and cooperatives aims to establish an idea that develop poverty reduction solutions to specific ecological problems. (Baillie & Waite, 2014) Waste For Life does not manage projects but effectively facilitates other groups, for example carteneros in this case. “With this project, Waste For Life's dual goal is to reduce the harmful environmental impact of non-recycled waste products and promote self-sustaining and economic security for at-risk populations who depend on waste to survive.” (Insert book reference) page 21Students undertaking this engineering unit in stream 13 were split into groups of five and had the aim of finding a solution that would help reduce plastic waste going to landfill in Buenos Aires , in Argentina. Students will work for Waste For Life and well-developed solutions would be sent to Waste For Life. To provide a solution to the waste crisis in Buenos Aires, the team had to consider the social, environmental, economic and cultural aspects of the context while trying to keep the design unique, simple and effective. The specific waste product the students focused on for this context was plastic. Students had several options available to them to “recycle” plastic waste. Students were able to use the Kingston heat press that melted plastic into flat sheets, postforming the plastic into products by heating it slightly and then turning it into a product, and other ideas developed by students.
