For any professional institution, ethics is considered an important aspect in the workplace. Ethics is a set of concepts and principles that guide us in determining what behavior helps or harms others. As for professional ethics, they include expected personal, organizational and business standards of behavior. These may include honesty, integrity, responsibility, respect, confidentiality, etc. For professional geographers, whether non-profit, for-profit or government bodies, it is important to ensure that this ethic is used and that we treat /data products, the people we work with and the workplace with respect. Issues relevant to professional geographers include control and access to information, privacy and misuse of data, and international considerations. All of these extend to electronic networks, electronic databases, and professional geographers using geographic information systems. When working as a professional geographer, it is important to direct any concerns to the appropriate department. Reportable issues include theft, fraud, conflicts of interest, threats to employee safety, unauthorized access to customer or employee information, and illegal practices. When working with others, you must respect the opinions and rights of others, i.e. not spread accusations and/or rumors about colleagues and allow an open and honest ability to discuss differences and concerns. According to the Association of American Geographers, there are three areas where you help create high ethics and value and avoid tarnishing the credibility and image of companies: avoiding discrimination and harassment, supporting the community and promoting fairness in hiring. (1) These three......center of the sheet......place. When I address unethical behavior, I will make sure to report it to the appropriate staff; manager, team leader and/or human resources. Overall, workplace ethics are important to maintain the flow of work and make everyone involved happy with their colleagues. Not only that, but strong ethics help keep your business, agency or corporation credible in the eyes of others who use your products. If you participate in unethical practices, many consumers will not trust your product and you will not get repeat business. The same thing goes for professional geographers; if you participate in unethical practices, your information, data and/or research will be discredited due to the value-free approach. It is important to ensure that this ethic is used and that we treat the products/data, the people we work with and the workplace with respect.
