At the beginning of this course, I didn't think I would learn so much. Just last night my wife and I were watching "The Voice" and someone was singing "I'll Be There." I told her it was a Jackson 5 song. She disagreed with me and told me that Mariah Carey had sung that song. I looked it up and we were both right. I kept telling her that I was more right because the Jackson 5 sang it first. It made me think about this course and how I catch myself thinking about the history of songs every time I hear them on the radio or in a movie. When I started reading the textbook chapters I was confused about how and why certain songs are considered rock and roll. It's easy for me to understand why Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" is classified as rock and roll. The 2-bar guitar-derived blues riff at the beginning draws you into the song. Then they hit you with drums and vocals and you go crazy. The thing I couldn't understand was why bands like Culture Club and their song “Karma Chameleon” were studied in a course on rock....
