The DSM 5 states that if a person has five of the following symptoms they may have dependent personality disorder: difficulty making routine decisions without input , reassurance and advice from others, requires others to take on responsibilities that they should take care of, fear of disagreeing with others and risking disapproval, difficulty starting projects without the support of others, excessive need to obtain nourishment and support from others, including allowing others to impose themselves rather than risk rejection or disapproval, feels vulnerable and helpless when alone, desperately seeks another relationship when it ends and has an unrealistic worry about being left alone and unable to care take care of yourself (Diagnostics). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders also states that a depressive and anxiety disorder may be present and that this disorder is more common in women. A possible risk factor for the development of dependent personality disorder is very severe authoritarian parenting in which decisions are made for children and adolescents inappropriately, promoting dependence and the inability to make decisions (Cleveland Clinic,
