I chose to perform Because of You for my evaluation song this quarter, I feel this song is sung well with my voice type and works well within a genre of musical theatre/pop, so the creation is suitable to be used for auditions. The story of the original song is quite complex, it focuses on a young mother looking back at her childhood and in particular her father, how he leans on her and projects all his problems onto her. even if he is too young to face them all. She clearly understands this more as she has grown up and realized what happened to her, her father emotionally abused her, she expresses it with the line "you should have known better than to lean on me". The father character in the original is obviously troubled. He is someone who can't deal with his problems and uses other people's happiness to make himself feel better. The little girl obviously had a bad childhood for this reason, feeling that she could not trust anyone and did not allow anyone to emotionally enter her life, she states: "Because of you I find it difficult to trust not only myself but everyone who they surround me, because of you I am afraid.” Her father treated her so badly when she was younger that she is afraid of life and is afraid to trust anyone. She later talks about her “hearing you cry every night in her sleep ". I can only imagine that as a child it must have been scary for her to hear her father screaming in his sleep and having nightmares! I started thinking about how this story could have changed, the song could be about someone's past relationship, maybe a boy has cheated on his girlfriend. He may have a lot of problems with himself, maybe a mental disorder, which means he has put a lot of pressure on his partner, making him stressful... middle of the paper... I would focus on each issue and let it be known to people that certain types of things are normal to deal with (e.g. sexuality and drug pressure) but that other things, such as emotional and physical abuse, are not things to ignore and you need to speak up about them. There is simply not enough support nowadays for adults going through this kind of thing let alone teenagers. In conclusion the musical would be suited to theater in education more than the West End, from the stories and issues it deals with it appeals more to help people get through things and provide support rather than just having a random story. I think he would do much better. Keep the cast young because it's easier to identify with them as teenagers and it's more believable. The scenography, characters and costumes would be kept simple and Brechtian so as not to distract from the important topics discussed.
