Topic > Summary of Robert Merton's Middle Range Theory - 1046

He believed that a revision was needed so that empirical tests could be determined that could produce greater precision within a society. With these changes, the possibilities of measurability improved and therefore functionalism could be tested within a society. As a result, Merton devised the functional analysis paradigm. He was direct in his proposal to focus only on groups, organizations, societies and cultures. He wanted more order and patterns to be applied to everything that could be subjected to structural-functional analysis. The adaptation factor of functionalism has been explained as necessary for the cohesion of a society. His goal was to avoid individual motivations. He spoke of non-functions as irrelevant to social construction. Just as a cancerous tumor would be to the human body, these elements would only cause dissent and decay of society as a whole and therefore must be eliminated (or cut out). Another example would be a charity that only promises to cure chickenpox. This would be useless in today's society due to vaccinations that prevent this disease. While the organization would not be considered harmful, it would not be considered helpful
