The 1970s represent a pivotal point in history that rewrote how America viewed its environmental policies, both from the perspective of politicians and that of citizen scientists. As the public became more aware of environmental issues, concerns about pollution, improper disposal, dwindling resources, radiation, and poisoning captivated a growing number of advocates. These supporters ensured that, unlike the conservative movement of the Progressive Era (1890-1920), which was primarily elitist, this modern movement was driven by “the common man.” It was an era that celebrated leaders like John Muir, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Thomas Jefferson. One of those leaders at the forefront of these radical changes was Congressman Morris K. Udall, a man whose ideals helped lay the foundation of modern environmentalism and conservation.
