Topic > Analysis of the Movie '12 Years a Slave' - 1062

The director was able to give us enough information to get an accurate portrayal of Christianity during this time period and to provide a literary aspect that can be analyzed. There are direct Christian references as well as some less obvious nuances. There are two moments when we are introduced to people who read the Bible. When Ford read to his slaves he did so with good intentions. When Epps read to his slaves he twisted the messages to subdue his slaves. Through this we can see the negative consequences of people's illiteracy and how people can be exploited through religion. There was also the depiction of Patsey as a Christ-like figure. One last religious aspect I would like to touch on is that no other religion was present in the film. It is well known that Christianity was imposed on slaves to replace their pagan beliefs. The absence of their old religion clearly speaks of the subjugation that was imposed on them
