Topic > Gonorrhea disease: a sexually transmitted disease

The main cause of gonorrhea disease is the proliferation of the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, also known as gonococci or gonococcus. This bacterium is a gram-negative diplococcus, meaning it has a thin layer of peptidoglycan in its cell wall and is spherical in shape and found in pairs. The organism is usually found in the cell in a phagocytic leukocyte, with nuclei of various shapes. Because the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium is found inside a phagocytic white blood cell, it is not known whether the bacterium is in the process of being killed or whether it survives indefinitely. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is reported and notified as one of the most common bacteria affecting the reproductive system in humans. Although gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease, it is not just limited to the reproductive system, as it can infect other areas of the human body. Neisseria gonorrhoeae has a typical gram-negative outer membrane composed of proteins, a thin layer of peptidoglycan, phospholipids and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The bacterium has fimbriae, which are finger-like projections that extend several micrometers from its cell surface and is thinner than a flagellum. They play an important role in adhesion to the mucous membrane of its host and, as virulence factors, mediate infection of host cells. As mentioned previously, Neisseria gonorrhoeae is diplococcus, meaning it is even and has a spherical shape. It has no spores and has twitch motility. This contracted motility allows the bacterium to form biofilms. Biofilm is defined as a complex collection of microbes and can be beneficial or harmful. During growth, Neisseria gonorrhoeae releases resolvable fragments of peptidoglycan. These molecules are implicated ... middle of paper ... and in the constant intake of antibiotics and preventive treatments because bacterial resistance has appeared. Practicing abstinence is the safest and most effective way to prevent gonorrhea along with other sexually transmitted diseases. However, if you choose to engage in sexual activity, you must wear a condom during any type of sexual contact, including anal, oral, or vaginal sex. The condom works as a barrier to reduce the chances of spreading sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and pregnancy. Other preventative methods include asking your partner to get tested for any sexually transmitted infection and refraining from having sex with partners who have experienced or are experiencing signs or symptoms related to an sexually transmitted disease. It is also important that both partners are treated for gonorrhea to reduce reinfection and further incidences.
