Topic > Negative Effects of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

Food, food, food, is what our American culture revolves around. Biotechnology has supposedly been used to make “improvements” to our food, from the fast food industry to our local grocery store. This went largely unnoticed by the general public. Maybe you've heard of GMOs? These supposedly improved genetically modified organisms are not at all beneficial to our bodies, but the FDA wouldn't want us to know that. GMOs include alfalfa, corn, flax, rice, sugar beets, yellow squash, canola, cotton, papaya, soybeans, squash, and wheat. What exactly are GMOs? According to the Non-GMO Project, these are "genetically modified organisms", plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering or GE). This experimental technology fuses the DNA of different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding." (Non-GMO) This is important to know because they have a direct effect on the lives of every American. They are in most of the foods you eat and you don't even know it. There have been groups pushing the issue of GMO labeling on the products we purchase, but somehow this situation has been avoided. The negative effects of GMOs can be seen in the results of studies conducted on animals and humans. Animal studies show organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging and infertility. In humans they saw that GMOs remained in their systems for very long periods of time, which caused new bacteria to grow, and toxic insectides produced by GMOs such as corn were unable to exit the body quickly. Natural resources are the basis of... ..middle of paper......getting pregnant due to the toxins that have been released into their bodies. New tumors will likely form in people, or old ones will become much more noticeable. Allergies that people have never had can result from genetically produced allergens in GMOs. I think if we don't start bringing light and changing this situation, then our power to keep our bodies healthy will be completely taken away. Maybe people will start to realize what is happening and become proactive in a food revolution. I always thought I had the power to stay healthy, but after researching the foods I eat I realized that's not the truth. The truth is that GMOs in our foods are very toxic and something must be done about their production. Technology has greatly affected the production of this instead of helping our world, at least in this area
