One of the main musical waves of the time was calmer, gentler rock. A major band called The Beatles was so popular during this time that it was called Beatle Mania. The Beatles were one of several bands to come to America and many more would arrive gaining the title of the British Invasion. During the 1960s the American economy was growing rapidly. This time period focused on the real estate and computer industries that overwhelmed automobiles, chemicals, and electrically powered consumer durables, which were the leading industries in the 1950s. Agriculture fell from 19.2 to 7.5 percent, the minimum wage increased from $1.00 to $1.25, and unemployment was about 6 percent. Another economic point is the growing middle class. Between 1945 and 1960, average family income, adjusted for inflation, nearly doubled. Rising incomes have doubled the size of the middle class. Before the Great Depression of the 1930s only a third of Americans were middle class, but in postwar America two-thirds were. Many middle-class families in postwar America became suburban families. Of the 13 million new homes built in the 1950s, 85 percent were in the suburbs. The GI Bill aided this growth greatly. Soldiers returning home from war would get a government loan for a house or to go to college. Making university increasingly a social norm. This still impacts society today which creates more jobs with the requirement of a college degree. Political culture has become more focused on containing communism with the theory that helps this, called the domino theory: “Military intervention in Korea and Vietnam, finally, there are broader considerations that could follow what you would call the falling domino principle.
