1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY There has been a surge of faith-based organizations in postcolonial Zimbabwe. FBOs have contributed positively to Zimbabwean society, although they have been neglected and few studies have been done on these organizations, only secular organizations have been well studied and therefore unfair by FBOs. FBOs have a religious backbone in the work they are involved in, unlike non-governmental organizations which have no religious attachment to them. Both FBOs and NGOs may be involved in the same work, for example advocacy or humanitarian assistance, but they differ when it comes to religious ties. However, it is argued that FBOs are a form of NGOs as they all focus on development and offer both financial and humanitarian assistance. The need to address the Zimbabwean crisis has pushed many FBOs to actively participate and engage in issues affecting the country. Organizations such as the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Council of Churches operated in the country before independence, but a number of organizations have formed since the late 1990s. The increase may be contributed to the absenteeism of the rule of law that these FBOs wanted to end as well as the availability of foreign donors willing to sponsor development and. FBOs like Habakkuk Trust have been engaged in sustainable development projects to economically help people who need help. The organization which is based in Bulawayo, works closely with communities in Matabeleland in sustainable development (www.habakkuktrust.org) Zimbabwe Christian Alliance (ZCA) was formed by a group of church leaders who believed that the political challenges , economic and social issues in Zimbabwe ...... middle of paper ...... nation building and the impact of their programs on the people of Zimbabwe. Religious organizations help promote peace, monitor human rights violations and spread the spirit of love, tolerance and forgiveness and therefore deserve to be studied. address the harsh socio-economic and political climate that has existed in Zimbabwe since 2000. The researcher will challenge religious organizations to work together towards a common goal which is to rebuild Zimbabwe and ensure that there is peace, economic and political development. The research findings will help chart the way forward for FBOs in helping common men have a better life and living conditions
