Discipline is extremely enforced in these schools because it teaches self-control, which is ultimately what the College is about. Before enrolling, students are required to read the code of conduct and demonstrate that they understand its terms. The contract outlines zero tolerance for classroom misbehavior, cheating, substance abuse, etc. If you are caught cheating you will automatically be expelled from school. They are free to punish you however they reasonably want since the government is not involved. This is why teachers should not waste time ending side conversations among students in the classroom. They are well aware of the possible outcomes and teachers will not hesitate. There are rarely any issues regarding student misbehavior as they are well aware and mature enough not to break the code of conduct. Private schools are very strict when they have to resort to disciplinary action. With the increasing number of school shootings, safety is becoming an important factor in ensuring that students feel comfortable and accepted. The Bureau of Justice Statistics and the National Center for Education Statistics compiled a report asking students if they fear being threatened on their way to/from school. 5.1% of public students were threatened. Only 0.9% of private school students experienced this problem (Roper). Private schools are much safer due to smaller enrollments. Bullying is noticed much earlier in private schools than in public schools. Students also form stronger bonds with teachers in counselors, so it seems normal for them to talk to them. Private schools also employ counselors to conduct lessons on bullying and many other issues that children will face. Children who can express their feelings, ideas and opinions without fear of being judged learn to trust and compromise when faced with the problems they face.
