Topic > Establish laws against cyberbullying - 787

“I don't know why everyone hates me so much. But maybe I do it because now I hate myself too. Right now I don't see the point in trying, talking or breathing. I just finished” (“Cyberbully”). Scary words, right? These few sentences from the movie Cyberbully could be someone's last words. Cyberbullying is the inappropriate use of electronic communication to intimidate a person through text messages, rumors, pictures, fake profiles, etc. on social networking sites. Cyberbullying should have specific laws against it. If all abuse is illegal and against the law, then why isn't cyberbullying? Cyberbullying is equivalent to the effects of traditional bullying because it causes pain, emotional or physical. This nation can decide many punishments to deliver to the bully. Cyberbullying should be considered a crime because it can potentially lead to injustice for the bullied individuals, emotional and psychological pain and, even worse, self-harm or suicide. Initially, some people might say that justice is not necessarily required for individuals who are victims of cyberbullying because “if simply being an idiot were a criminal offense, [then] we would need many more prisons than the hundreds we already have” (Butler 1 ). However, if actions are not taken to stop cyberbullying, injustice towards people who are victims of cyberbullying will continue to increase. The Pledge of Allegiance specifically mentions “freedom and justice for all,” but still no justice for individuals who are victims of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying isn't about "just being an idiot," because if it were, many teens wouldn't be depressed, drop out of school, abuse drugs, or hurt themselves. To give justice to the victims it is not necessary for the executioners to be in prison. Society can emerge... in the midst of a paper-filled life, far from itself. This is a big problem and needs to be recognized. This nation has reached a point where there is a sheer need to enact laws against cyberbullying because we cannot simply let young people give up on life. All in all, cyberbullying is a dangerous growing problem that needs to be tamed. Cyberbullying is a serious topic all over the world that needs to be solved because it causes mental pain, responsibility to commit suicide and inequality of justice among numerous victims. It needs separate laws against it because it is harmful to the society. It makes the Internet a dangerous environment for young people. Cyberbullying is something that can be solved in the future and people should support movements against it. Technology is one of the greatest advances in the world, but it is unacceptable to take advantage of it incorrectly to cause pain to others.
