Topic > The Study on Depression and Excessive Internet Use

Now more than ever, the world is connected to each other. Whether on the street or across continents, personal information and social life are readily available. With so much of a person's life available to the world, many young adults seem to suffer from issues with depression and lower self-esteem than other generations before them. According to a study by Morrison & Gore, in which researchers used items from the Beck Depression Inventory and the AI Test to determine a correlation between depression and excessive Internet use. With an estimated 75% of online adults using social media, as indicated in Pew Internet Research findings, does this level of connectivity and accessibility have a negative effect on those who use it the most? In Pew research, minorities (those who identify as non-white or, sometimes, non-heterosexual) represented the majority of social users. However, not all social media is used the same way. In fact, African Americans and Hispanics were significantly more likely than their Caucasian counterparts to use the photo-sharing application, Instagram. (Brenner, page 6). With such an influential and minority presence on these social media sites, the concept of cognitive well-being, or life satisfaction, is being called into question. (Kross, page 1). Cognitive well-being can be analyzed by starting a discussion about usage and whether this higher usage could create some sort of addictive and harmful habit in minorities. Due to previous comparative studies and various other studies, we are asked whether social media, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, have a related effect on the emotional and mental well-being of its users, especially those who identify with minority groups . Based on my research...... middle of paper...... $20 and we were entered into a lottery to receive an iPad2 for participating” (Kross et. al, p. 2, )Data AnalysisThe Data can be analyzed in a number of ways that will not take much time, as it will be relatively low survey data collected and coded. Since the survey will take place in person or online, I anticipate that my team will explicitly look for the correlation between life happiness and emotional health, as well as minority social media use. I anticipate that our coding of the results as well as our limitations (aside from the 15 years in which the study was conducted) might be similar to what was found in the childhood and social abstinence study. The Katz et. al. The study found “that the current study used a latent variable model to establish a latent social withdrawal construct defined by four indicators of social withdrawal” (Katz, et. al., 1229, ).
