In the Greek city-state of Athens, women were very limited. A woman had very few property rights, even fewer than in other city-states. However, women could make dedications and loans even for rather large sums. The priesthood was also a public activity open to all women (ancient Greek civilization). In Rome women were responsible for the home and called masterfamilias. They were expected to behave with modesty, grace and dignity. Women married in their early teenage years. The Roman state rewarded women who successfully gave birth. After having three children a woman was considered legally independent. In case of divorce, the woman recovered the entire dowry and returned to her paternal home, unless she was independent before marriage.
