As a child, Dennis Rader seemed quite normal and did not stand out much from other children. However, according to Rader himself, he claimed to have developed fantasies of control, slavery and torture from an early age. Along with these fantasies he also brutalized animals such as cats, which he killed by tying them with wire and hanging them in a stable. Even as a child, Dennis was aroused by his mother's spanking, secretly obtained S&M magazines, stole women's underwear, and peeked in windows. He even dressed up in women's underwear in the basement of his parents' house, tied a rope around his neck as if he were hanging, and photographed himself. (Sable 2006, pg.1-2) Dennis Rader has managed to live in a normal society as well as his own twisted world. He was married, had two children, had several stable jobs, and had even graduated from college. Furthermore, he was an active member of his church and also helped with the boy scouts, throughout his community he was seen as a normal man with a regular life and before committing these crimes he had absolutely no criminal record. As Rader grew up, his fantasies continued to grow and he became what is known as a Lust killer (someone who brutally and inhumanely kills multiple victims to achieve maximum sexual satisfaction) and in 30 years he killed up to 10 known people.
