Would you rather not have conflict in your life? Antigone is a play based on conflicts between characters. Antigone is the sister of Polyneices, who is dead. Polyneices is considered a traitor to Creon and does not bury those who are against him. When conflicts occur, Antigone, Creon, and the Chorus argue about whether or not to have Polyneices buried. Conflicts are a necessary part of life because of the changes we encounter. It is appropriate to rebel and create conflict when we believe in doing the right thing, but someone is taking away the necessary tool to prevent us from achieving those goals. Additionally, it is appropriate to comply when violence gets out of hand. The changes that happen make us readers better individuals and once the conflicts are resolved, we will not repeat the same mistakes and therefore conformity will be possible. It is appropriate to rebel and create conflict when you believe in doing the right thing, but someone takes away the tool you need to do it. The main conflict in the play between Antigone and Creon is the best example of this topic. Antigone believes that everyone deserves a proper burial. According to her, even if someone is a traitor or does not like Creon's views, he deserves a proper burial. In this case, Creon decides that Polyneices does not deserve a proper burial because Polyneices is a traitor to him. Antigone now wants to bury Polyneices and does not care about Creon's edict. However, Ismene warns Antigone: “But think of the danger! Think what Creon will do!” (469). Ismene is telling Antigone that she is afraid to bury Polyneices behind Creon's back, because if they are captured they will be punished greatly. Ismene and everyone else in Thebes are afraid of Cr...... middle of paper ......d of how we can be better individuals from the original conflict. Choragos tells us that if we want to be happy we must be intelligent. In Antigone it is appropriate to conform when violence gets out of hand. This happens when all of Creon's loved ones die due to his stubbornness and pride. However, it is appropriate to rebel when we believe we are doing the right thing, but someone is taking away the necessary tool to prevent us from achieving those goals. This happens in the play when Antigone wants to bury Polyneices, but Creon is too powerful and causes fear to all the people of Thebes. We can learn from this play that conflict is necessary in our lives, because without it we cannot learn. Works Cited Sophocles. Antigone.
