Much of their understanding comes from what only interests them, and the most important stories and factors are ignored or incomplete (Stokes 2003, p. 297). Not receiving the full picture gives us a limited understanding of world music and its subgenres. Different musical genres around the world have been shaped in many ways by influences such as; historical and traditional roots, people and their culture, migration, globalization, politics and commodification. Nueva Canción is an example of a genre of world music that has been influenced in these ways and which has a strong historical and political history worthy of recognition.
