Some of Zappos' core values are building relationships through open and honest communications, building a positive team, and embracing and leading change, to name a few. For me, the most rewarding core value, and an example of socialization described by a Zappos employee, is “Provide WOW service.” Providing WOW service incorporates honesty, trust and a sense of building relationships with others. The pride demonstrated by Zappos employees is so great that they inherit the message communicated by the company which spills over into their personal lives and will influence their social identity. “Relational communication contributes to individuals' identification with an organization or to a sense of “belonging” in their work environment.” (Shockley-Zalabak, 2015, p. 31) The functional tradition would view my response differently if the company's message was not conveyed as organizational communication as people. For example, if the Zappos message were conveyed as organizational communication as meaning, there would be continually changing behaviors because those interactions would create multiple realities and perceptions that would become the process by which meanings are processed.
