Physician James Kay-Shuttleworth made many observations that contradicted the supposed greatness that workers experienced from factories. “While the engine turns, the people must work… men, women and children yoked together with iron and steam… subject to a thousand sources of suffering… chained to the iron machine that knows no suffering or toil.” (Factory Movement) He also spoke openly about the less than desirable air quality inside and outside the factories, the squalor of the places where most workers lived, in the vicinity of the factories, as well as the meals that were consumed the workers ate because of their finances
