Getting money to pay for property damage, especially in developing countries, is difficult. However, for developing nations it can undo years of progress. This is even more frightening as natural disasters are becoming more frequent in the southern Mediterranean and the Middle East. There has been an increase from three per year in 1980 to more than 13 in 2006. The increase is unlikely to stop soon and developing nations will be unable to compete with nature.II. United Nations Involvement The United Nations adopts tactics used in disaster areas, prevention and relief. The UN and NATO have collaborated on many missions to provide relief to the disaster-hit areas. They coordinated aid and helped provide the money needed to rebuild the areas. Another source of aid is the Emergency Disaster Relief Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
