Roxy aimlessly pulls another weed from the soil of her family's cornfield. He makes a small pile of them and then throws them into the field. She hides there to escape household chores and to be alone. Regularly, Roxy brought water to the animals in their barn with only a couple of complaints, but today she didn't feel like doing anything. Breakfast that morning was quieter than usual, which Roxy ate as quickly as she could, getting up from the table quicker than usual. Roxy became quite hungry, after sitting alone for a few hours. “Uncle Tuck and the boys must have finished plowing the field,” Roxy thought as she got up to leave, “I could hide in the attic after eating, and it's a lot cooler there than here in the field.” He walked between rows of corn until he reached his house: a two-story wooden structure, painted a faded turquoise, with a sagging, leaking roof. It was large and spacious, but not built to accommodate as many people as before. Roxy's cousins slept in the large attic upstairs, while the adults had rooms downstairs. The bad part about living with so many people under one roof was that Roxy could never be alone. Roxy's cousins had finished their chores and were in the backyard, playing stickball, a game they had invented a few summers ago. Andy hit the ball across the yard, Tim ran to retrieve it, and Bertha tried to convince the triplets to play by the rules. That was enough confusion for Roxy to slip off the porch without warning. "What are you doing?" Roxy turned her head at the sound of Jess, who was leaning against the railing. Roxy crossed her arms and turned from the stairs to face Jess. "Nothing you need to know." "I hope you finished watering the animals like you had to do it, it took you... middle of paper... over a stream. He turned and saw the stream he had been trying to reach all along. There she did it! She placed her hand on a lonely elm tree near the riverbank. She traced the name carved on the tree, Joshua. Now she knew how to find home , you?" Roxy turned at the sound of her name. “Mom? I'm here!" She ran towards the sound of her mother's voice. Her mother appeared with her two uncles behind her. "Roxy!" Miriam ran towards her and the two met in a relieved and joyful embrace. “I was so scared Don't ever do something like that to me again!” Roxy looked at her "I'm sorry mom. I just miss dad." Miriam pushed her hair behind her ear. “It wasn't Jess' fault,” Roxy continues, “I was just stubborn. Can I go home now?" Mom wipes tears from her eyes. "Sure, let's go home.”
