There are two types of facilities: detention facilities and correctional facilities. Detention facilities are used as temporary holding facilities for those awaiting transfer or trial. Correctional facilities consist of state/federal jails and prisons. Prison is the place where people who commit minor crimes and have been in prison for less than a year will be present. On the other hand, prison is where people who commit crimes go and usually for at least a year. There are currently more than two million people in prisons/jails. The United States has more people in prison than anywhere else in the world. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2004: “In 2004, the United States had 1,410,000 prisoners incarcerated in more than 1,500 state and federal prisons. Additionally, more than 714,000 were in local jails, more than 100,000 children were in custody, and approximately 5 million were on probation or parole. This large amount of people in prisons has led to overcrowding. There are three major contributors to the increased prison population: stricter drug laws, DUI laws, and the closure of mental institutions.
