Topic > Ethical Issues in Business - 1834

The textbook defines business ethics as "the accepted principles of right and wrong which govern the conduct of business men." Business ethics also govern the members of a profession and the actions of an organization. Many organizations implement an ethics strategy which is “a course of action that does not violate accepted principles.” These principles are used to guide organizations and employees to make the right decisions. There are numerous issues that influence international business ethics. They include employment practices, human rights, environmental regulations, corruption, and moral obligations of multinational corporations. Employment practice refers to the working conditions in which an employee must work. This can be very difficult to evaluate, because many times the working conditions of a host nation are inferior to those of an organization's home nation. Many organizations have struggled with these regulations. A good example of this is the problems Nike found itself in in the 1990s. There were numerous reports that the working conditions of most of its subcontractors were terrible. The Nike company was not breaking any laws, but was questioning the ethics of using a sweatshop. After this incident it left a number of questions for the international market. In recent years, many companies have cut ties with organizations that use unsafe and unfair labor practices. The next major international trade issue is human rights. In many nations today, fundamental human rights are not respected. In much of the developed world, fundamental rights are taken for granted, such as freedom of speech or freedom of movement. The world of international business often wonders whether we should... middle of paper... follow them too. It is clear that there are many ethical violations and if a company were to act in this way today it would be highly despised. Utilitarian ethics states that the moral value of actions is determined by their consequences. In other words, your actions are based on the consequences you create and whether they are good or bad. However, it can be very difficult to measure. On the other hand, Kantian ethics states that people should be treated as ends and not as means to the ends of others. This means that all people must respect others and treat them as human beings. The last theory is the theory of justice which wants economic goods and services to have a just distribution. This means that everyone gets their fair share, no matter what. However, these practices are often difficult to implement and it is also difficult to see results.
