Caring for an Inmate The Dallas County Jail is a 6,500-bed facility located near downtown Dallas, Texas. This county jail houses inmates for crimes such as trespassing or murder in the capital city. Within this population you will find that the majority of individuals need some type of medical and mental health attention. This care ranges from chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and seizures, to more complex conditions such as sickle cell anemia. You also encounter inmates who have acute medical problems, such as inmate altercations, slips and falls, and self-harm. Although inmates are incarcerated for crimes, there is still a medical need and requirement to be met regarding this population. Although it is disheartening, the medical team is committed to providing quality healthcare to these patients. Inmates who test positive for pregnancy are referred to a prison obstetrician. These women are followed throughout their stay in the Dallas County Jail. Prenatal vitamins are administered and seen at appropriate intervals guided by ACOG guidelines. High-risk pregnant inmates are referred to Parkland Hospital's OB complications unit and are followed for high-risk pregnancies. Third-trimester inmates are carefully observed and taught about the stages of labor. While it is not ideal for babies to be born in the Dallas County Jail, there are times when babies will be born in prison. For these cases, preparation is carried out, a birth kit and qualified nursing staff are available to ensure a safe environment. From chronic health issues, to emergencies, to pregnant inmates, the Dallas County Jail is equipped to care for any health condition, many times providing better healthcare than inmates would receive outside of jail. The process is organized and leaves little room for error. This population could easily be overlooked, but by implementing an effective process, Dallas County Jail inmates are able to receive quality medical care while there and be equipped with resources and education to continue their care when
