However, Fresh Off the Boat is different in the sense of how the characters look but it is not different in content. If Fresh Off the Boat was a family comedy that was Asian, then it would be groundbreaking. The common ground that is established in hierarchies is a way to achieve identification with others, which is something that people generally desire. For example, people may come from different backgrounds but if they watch a movie together, the structure of watching a movie together is a source of identification for them. The problem is that no one can always follow the rules of a hierarchy. We violate the rules all the time, or at least we think we do (Brummet, p. 206). For example, we may have racist thoughts and feel guilty because we know that such thoughts violate the principles of equality that many of our hierarchies insist on. Instead, this television series tells us that it's okay to laugh at the characters and their absurd ways. It seems like they're telling the audience that it's okay to make fun of these characters because they are jokes themselves. I fear this will allow audiences to take these jokes at face value. Fresh Off the Boat may be a historic moment, but it's not one we should be looking at
