I always try to speak slowly, clearly, calmly and uncertainly so that the client does not feel intimidated or pressured by my comments. Likewise, this kind behavior helps my clients feel like they are in a safe environment where they can freely express their opinion. Dr. McKee also commented on my voice and said it will be helpful to me later and will allow me to disturb the client while maintaining a non-threatening position. In addition to using the LUV technique, having attentive body language and soft voice, I think I also did well with the use of paralinguistic expressions. To encourage my client to continue telling her story, I made a subtle “mmmmmm” sound when she finished a thought or during an important segment of her narrative. Furthermore, I occasionally used paralinguistic expressions as a response and “skipped a turn” instead of providing direct feedback.
