Fatherhood Knows No Limits In the novel East of Eden, John Steinbeck expresses different fatherhood techniques through Cyrus Trask and Samuel Hamilton. Ciro, who emotionally detaches himself from his children, creates strong but fearful men. While Samuel provides love and wisdom, thus forming enthusiasts. Steinbeck juxtaposes the parenting styles of these men by explaining the flourishing of love and compassion towards their children. Steinbeck juxtaposes these parenting styles by explicating the prosperity of love. Even in dire circumstances, Cyrus instills a sense of strength and positivity in his children. Cyrus' tough compassion gives them a fighting chance and helps the boys through tough times. Their punishments, including "overwork and a false theatrical humility", help them maintain humility when pride begins to seep into their minds but they become easily angered. (32) This creates an immunity to neglect from experiencing it in their younger lives. However, the strength every guy needs comes from a lack of thoughtfulness, creating tough men. Only Cyrus' teachings train them, "physically and mentally", which he aspires to and achieves with fear.(21) This, however, creates contempt in their hearts. The knowledge given to them by him creates a set of guidelines that each child follows and lives by. These create men who tower over Cyrus and put him in the shadow of his sons. Additionally, Adam and Charles' father helps the boys in their later life by embedding ideals in their minds. Cyrus builds a place to escape to and Adam also develops a familiarity with it and hides there when he doesn't "want to go home", this is war.(51). Each generation of Trasks hides in war, fleeing from their own problems. Although sometimes hiding is worse... middle of paper... he loves as much as necessary and maintains his presence in every relationship, especially in the family, and when abandonment enters his family, the devastation overwhelms. His heart, full of compassion, transforms from happy to melancholy. Furthermore, this creates an aura around Samuel that he is not used to and he becomes more and more pitiful. However, he maintains the father figure of a wise man even after his death. Both parenting techniques bestow admirable attributes on their children, however Samuel provides his children with better life skills and treats them with a love that is dear to him. Every father plays an important role in his children's lives and influences the way they think, speak and understand. The sons of these distinguished fathers live vehemently lives and leave memorable imprints even on their acquaintances due to the compassion of their fathers..
