To date, suicide is the main cause of death in adolescence. Every thirty seconds a teenager attempts suicide. What drives teenagers to commit suicide? Is there anything in the world you would kill yourself for? Is there anything really worth your life? Suicide among teenagers reached an all-time high in 2.13. In recent years, adolescent suicide has increased rapidly due to many factors such as family expectations, social problems, media and peer influence; the best way to lower these rates is to raise awareness and start a campaign. Jordan Lewis (15) was bullied at school and this led to his suicide. Jordan was a normal teenager, a sophomore, on the football team. Jordan had been continually bullied by his peers, but school officials claimed they were unaware of what was happening. Jordan's father Brad (47) said he too was bullied while at school and told his son several times that things would get better and that they would eventually go away. Jordan couldn't find an outlet, a way to end it, so he ended his life with a gun. Rebecca Sedwick also took her own life due to peer influence and bullying. In 2000, thirteen Rebeccas threw themselves to their deaths. Two minors sent Rebecca harassing messages continuously until she couldn't take it anymore. Both of these cases are similar in many ways. Both Rebecca and Jordan were influenced by bullying to commit suicide. The main difference between the two dead children was their parents' reactions. Jordan's father, Brad, has made several videos in an attempt to raise awareness about bullying, while Rebecca's parents haven't done much. Rebecca's parents should have tried to raise public awareness, although perhaps a foundation or even a book would have made a sign... middle of paper ......is bullying bad because it leads to suicide? There is no good reason, stating honest facts will get people's attention and help raise awareness about people like Jordan and Rebecca. People should know their stories, what really happened. Teen suicide rates in Western countries are at an all-time high, higher than they have ever been before. An example is Australia. In Australia, suicide is the second leading cause of death for adolescents and young adults. The United States is not far behind. The third cause of death here is suicide which usually accumulates due to self-harm and depression. One of the main problems is that these adolescents and adults do not receive the psychiatric counseling they need. “Abnormal teenagers” or teenagers who are outside the norm are the ones who face suicide and depression the most. Lesbians and gays are at high risk of suicide.
