Giving Birth Without Fear My clinical experience was at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City. My experience at the pregnancy clinic last spring was memorable. It opened my eyes to not only be a nursing student, but also a woman who would one day experience what the women I witnessed giving birth experienced. I have had the opportunity to witness four natural births and care for postpartum women. There was great support during labor and delivery for the new mom from her partner, doctor, nurses and even us nursing students in attendance. All women who gave birth had to have epidurals to stop the pain they felt during labor. Frequent assessments were carried out on expectant mothers during labor and after giving birth. The children who were born were all well cared for. Their airway and temperature were the nurses' priorities. Patient satisfaction was also one of their priorities. The model of care I observed was the education provided to women about the different positions they could assume to relieve labor pain or give them comfort, and the doctor's ability to give patients a sense of control over their health . The healthcare team made sure to involve family members, especially partners of new mothers, in their healthcare. Overall, the model of care I observed was patient-centered care. The agency's priorities were the safety of the new mother and the health and safety of the child. The agency monitored the new mother's bleeding and vital signs, and when they had a tear, nurses assessed it and took care of it to prevent infection. I have not seen any change in customer expectations. The customer's expectations were... half of paper... that patients could choose what they want. All healthcare needs to do is educate patients, let them choose, and if they choose the wrong thing, then they should be told the consequences. Childbirth Without Fear is a great book that should be read by all nursing students, nurses, aspiring mothers and fathers and expectant mothers because it gives information about pregnancy, eliminates fear and increases confidence in pregnancy. As a nursing student who aspires to work with women in the healthcare field, this book was an eye-opener for me. Reference Dick-Read, G. (2013).
