Sliding off the road suspended over the edge of a cliff with a 40 foot drop. Michelle Wheatley is 24 years old and if she hadn't been wearing her seatbelt she would have gone through the front windshield and fallen off the cliff. I believe that people everywhere should wear seat belts while driving. Even though seat belt use has been proven to save lives, not everyone believes that seat belt use should be mandatory. They think this should be their decision and not be regulated by the government. “Statistics show that car crash fatality rates are higher on rural roads in states that do not require drivers and passengers to wear seat belts.” I think these people only think about themselves and not about others. Children tend to follow their parents' example. I think people should wear seat belts while driving. Three reasons why I think people should wear seat belts are that seat belts help prevent injuries and reduce the risk of being thrown from the car. Secondly they help prevent families from losing their loved ones and thirdly airbags are not useful and do not work properly unless a seatbelt is worn. Seat belts help prevent injuries while driving. Most car accidents happen when someone is drunk, texting on their cell phone, or driving too fast. Every year, an average of 35,000 people die in road accidents. Most of them died because they were not wearing seat belts. Some injuries that occur when you are not wearing a seat belt are injuries to your head, shoulder, stomach, chest, ribs, neck and hips. Seat belt shoulder pads prevent your head from hitting the windshield, dashboard, steering wheel and other hard surfaces. Seat belts reduce serious injuries and accident-related deaths by 50%. Wearing seat belts can save people's lives... middle of paper... in 2003 there were 17,130 people living there. I think it's a no-brainer that people choose to wear seat belts every time they get in their cars. A task as simple as wearing a seat belt can save lives. Why would anyone risk their life by not wearing their seat belt, especially since most cars are equipped with seat belt alarms. 80% of new cars are equipped with seat belt warnings and 66% of all cars have this feature. Many people wear them to stop the alarm. Also, people need to think about their children and what they are teaching them. No parent wants to get a phone call to come to the morgue to identify their child because a seatbelt was not worn. Buckling up can save you years of guilt. After all, click it or ticket it, it's against the law to drive without a seatbelt.
