Topic > Pros and Cons of Health Insurance - 745

Compulsory health insurance allows us to solve many problems that we are facing nowadays such as free riders, higher number of uninsured in the country, etc. From an individual's perspective the requirement of health insurance will firstly make the individual independent rather than relying on society and any cost of medical treatment due to catastrophic events that the insured faces in the future will be covered by the health insurance and will have to bear much lower costs of medical care. And these services will also be available whether the person becomes ill or not. From a hospital perspective, mandating health insurance will reduce the problem of free riders in the hospital and if an insured person goes to the hospital for treatment, the cost of his or her medical treatment will not be totally absorbed by the hospital if the person does not is able to pay for the treatment and the amount will be split between the hospital and the insurance company. To make comprehensive health reform work it is necessary to spread the cost of care to those with high medical needs, which can easily be done by requiring health insurance. A good example of this can be understood from the individual mandate carried out in Massachusetts, where it proved to be very effective and only 2.65 of the population remained uninsured.
