The American upper class controls our governing bodies, our social institutions, our decision making, and everything else. Ask yourself: When has a poor black woman from downtown Houston ever navigated the detours and obstacles that pervade the journey into America's class system? In contrast, what percentage of American legislators, lobbyists, and lawyers come from upper-middle-class families? One element absent from Domhoff's book was the discussion of social capital. I believe that recognition of how networking among members of the upper class increases the social capital of American elites, and how that consequence may prove critical to maintaining class parameters and ensuring they remain in place for generations to come. Cutting off opportunities for communication between classes is probably the biggest cause of classism in America. It is not that Domhoff has neglected a discussion of social capital since his ideas more or less all concretize the idea; I just wish he had incorporated a discussion of the term directly into his
