Topic > Female athletes and discrimination against women in...

Women have always been treated differently than men. It doesn't matter if it's work, school, home or sport: the two sexes are always treated differently. In work, women can find themselves receiving less pay than a man. In school, women are held to a different standard than men. While raising a family, a mother's job is to juggle family and career. In sport, women will never be as good as men and will never be treated equally. At the beginning of the introduction of sport in schools, women were not allowed to play. Then they could play if they were good enough to play with the boys. Even if they were good enough they would often find themselves mistreated. Nowadays, thanks to Title XI, men and women are required to play the same number of sports to have equal opportunities. Somehow women are still discriminated against in sports. Players in the National Basketball Association make a ridiculous amount of money compared to what a player in the Women Nation Basketball Association makes. Female athletes are often made fun of because of their appearance. A woman will have to give up her sport if she becomes pregnant. Female athletes are discriminated against in sport and deserve the same rights as men. Female athletes are treated unfairly because of their pay. WNBA players don't get close enough to what an NBA player makes. On the Examiner's website the author stated, "The maximum salary a player can earn in the WNBA for the 2013 season is $107,000 (examiner.com)." That's not enough money for the work the athlete does. Kurt Badenhausen said: “A look at the NBA's top earners on and off the court puts Bryant at the top with combined earnings of $64.50... middle of the paper... future. Female athletes earn unreasonably less than male athletes. The paycheck is discriminatory against female athletes. They both do the same amount of work and spend the same amount of time on their work. Another reason why female athletes are discriminated against is their appearance. Just because an athlete exhibits male-like traits does not mean she is a man. It is unfair that the media will gossip about female athletes who exhibit similar traits to men. If a female athlete becomes pregnant at work she will have to miss an entire season of her sport. The athlete will only receive 50% of their pay for that season. This will make it difficult for the athlete to cope and support the new addition to the family. In the future, women should receive higher pay and be treated more like men.
