As a student who began her college career with no specific goals, I never thought I would write a personal statement for an application to receive a Master's in the profession of Social Work. However, I now feel that there is no future for me other than to offer my education and personal commitment to vulnerable people in order to stabilize their lives. After careful consideration of all areas of social work, I have found that my primary area of interest is providing resources and encouragement to people with disabilities to gain the freedom to live independent lifestyles without discrimination. My personal goal in this profession is to make every effort possible to assist these individuals in finding the means to meet their needs. After spending about a year volunteering at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and completing two field internships at local hospitals, I have found that my best work is done with the elderly population. These experiences have shaped my personal goal to lead a crusade for the civil rights of people with disabilities, particularly those of the older generation. Additionally, I now have a better understanding of the treatments and services provided to people with disabilities. Many patients in these hospitals have been admitted due to life-threatening injuries or illnesses. There are millions of Americans with disabilities, but feelings of helplessness, vulnerability, and depression are often evident, as if having a disability were not a common occurrence. In 2005, I was in a car accident that broke my pelvis, fractured my C1 vertebra, and required emergency surgery to remove my spleen. I couldn't sit or get out of bed for about 2 months and found myself...... middle of paper......rs. I completed a major in philosophy, with a strong emphasis on healthcare and medical ethics. I intend to implement the best ethical behavior possible to protect the clients and staff of these social welfare institutions; my goal is to make a difference in the lives of these patients. I am seeking an MSW at the Kent School of Social Work in order to gain the education, experience, and credentials required to prepare me to work with clients with disabilities and their families. I regularly go to seminars and continue my education outside of compulsory classes, as this effort contributes to my wealth of knowledge about geriatric social work and the duties that the profession requires. I am consumed with excitement and desire to begin the transition from student to professional and appreciate your consideration in helping me achieve my goal.
