Faustus and Mephastophilis play a childish prank on the Pope by making him look foolish. After that, the choir enters and talks about Faustus returning home to Germany where he boasts of his successes. The people are baffled by the knowledge that Faustus has retained and are very impressed by it. Line one-seventeen says, “Faustus is celebrated among his nobles.” Before becoming a doctor, Faustus was the son of a farmer. He didn't have much weight in the community. But now Faustus is not only among the nobles, but he is also among the emperors of Germany. Socially, Faustus rose in the world. Dine with the best company and eat the best foods. So, although Faustus is excelling materialistically, internally, and spiritually, Faustus is beginning to decline. During this dinner he plays another frivolous prank on the Emperor. Faustus has now gone from playing pranks on the Pope to playing pranks on an Emperor. Even his jokes are losing relevance. In addition to his damning jokes, Faustus' clock is literally running out of time. At the end of the play, Faustus' twenty-four years have passed and it is time for his soul to be taken to the place where it belongs: Hell.
