With the little freedom they have, they are not entitled to the things they have earned and worked hard for, it can all be taken away in the blink of an eye. In the film A Better Life, Carlos, the father, is an illegal immigrant from Mexico. He has lived in the United States for more than fourteen years, his son Luis was born here. He set foot in the United States illegally because “this country is a land of dreams. It can be a difficult place, a cruel place. But it's where [he] works, and [he] dreams of a better place for [his] son” (A Better Life). She just wanted to move to the United States so her son could have a better life than hers. Since Carlos was an illegal immigrant, they barely had freedom and this affected the way Luis behaved and shaped his identity. Luis began to rebel because he wasn't getting the father figure he wanted from Carlos. Carlos always had to stay home and stay hidden because he was afraid of being discovered, but then his worst nightmare came true. He was stopped and did not have the right credentials and the police discovered that he was an illegal immigrant. He was about to be deported and could do nothing to stay with his son, Luis had to stay with his aunt and wait until his father could return. According to Article 13 of the Declaration of Human Rights, “everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each State” (United Nations Declaration of Human Rights). This article does not refer completely to illegal immigration, but states that anyone has the right to become a resident of a state. Since everyone has the right of residency, Carlos could have stayed in the United States and continued to provide for his son.
