With all the diets, health concerns, and lack of knowledge about food in general nowadays, it's no surprise that people have turned to other means of obtaining nutrients. The main way to obtain these nutrients is through dietary supplements. Dietary supplements are described by the FDA website as a product to be taken orally and must contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs or other substances used to aid the diet. These are known as dietary ingredients and can come in the form of tablets, capsules, powders, energy bars and liquids (NPs). With this definition of a supplement, it is not surprising to find that the Nutrition Business Journal reported that $28 billion was spent on supplements in 2010.(np) Dietary supplements are part of most people's daily lives, but they are too integrated or necessary? part of life. Dietary supplements underwent a rebuild in 1994, when the United States Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA). Dr. William Soller explained that the DSHEA created a framework in which the FDA was allowed to create a regulatory system for dietary supplements. The DHSEA also clarified that dietary supplements are defined as a portion of food while dietary ingredients are not “food additives.” The DSHEA required manufacturers of new dietary ingredients (NDIs) to submit paperwork to the FDA so the FDA could say the ingredients were safe to consume. Today, with later amendments added to the DHSEA, the FDA can regulate dietary supplements more easily and can enforce enforcement against mislabeled and unsafe products. (Np). As good as this may sound, it doesn't mean that before a product reaches the market it is approved by the FDA, basically the FDA can... middle of paper... a story of 500 stories."
