Jurors, without better information to rely on, are more compelled to testify if the eyewitness appears certain. In most studies, the correlation between eyewitness confidence and eyewitness accuracy is poor (Matlin, 2013). Most eyewitnesses have strong confidence in their memories, even when they are not based entirely on actual memory. This results in jurors viewing the confidence shown as an accurate indicator of validity and forming their decisions accordingly. The more confident the eyewitness, the more confident the juror is and, as a result, has more confidence in the testimony.
