Compare and Contrast Two Chapters This paper will compare two CEOs who have led technology companies through difficult times. Michael Dell, CEO and founder of Dell Computers, and Andy Grove, former CEO and co-founder of Intel, each provided quality leadership as their companies faced the challenges of the fast-paced information technology industry. This article will introduce each man and describe their contributions to their company and the field of management, the resistance they encountered, the similarities in their professional lives, and the differences. Information about these two successful CEOs comes from Jeffrey Krames' (2003) book What the Best CEOs Know: 7 Exceptional Leaders and Their Lessons for Transforming Any Business. Introduction of Business Professionals and Their Contributions Michael Dell founded Dell Computer in 1984 and grew it into one of the largest computer manufacturers in the world. The success of Dell Computer has led Michael Dell to be considered the “youngest CEO of a Fortune 500 company” (Krames, 2003, p.58). Michael Dell's guiding principle is to focus on the customer. This principle routinely guided his leadership decisions, including decisions about computer design and development, the company's organizational structure, and how Dell Computer used the Internet. Andy Grove co-founded Intel in the late 1960s and helped it become the leading maker of memory chips and then the leading microprocessor. chip manufacturer in the world. Andy Grove's leadership through two significant challenges led to dramatic change for the company that led to its continued success. Through these challenges, Andy Grove realized that companies are facing strategic inflection points (SIPs) or moments where the company will be… halfway through… and also be impacted by Moore's Law , a prediction from Grove co-founder Gordon. Moore, that “computer chip power would double every 18 months” (Krames, 2003, p.136). This true concept has led to rapid change in the computer industry, causing Dell Computer and Intel to constantly change as technology changes. Each man contributed significantly to the success of his company based on his own philosophy. They provided excellent insight into the leadership paradigms and organizational challenges within the rapidly evolving IT industry. Both men have had a positive impact on the computer industry. It's fair to say that the industry may never look the same today if it weren't for these exceptional leaders. Works Cited Krames, Jeffrey A..
