There are many different characters portrayed in Irish literature. Readers never just see the stereotype of the Irishman. In the readings there are characters ranging from sexual deviants to a man who runs a drapery with his two spinster sisters. Each character has their own place in the story that ties into the deeper meaning, while some appear to be simple additions to their stories. Davy from City Belle seems to be one of those gratuitous characters, but does Davy have a deeper purpose and meaning in the play? Taking our first look at Davy in Belfast City Belle, he appears to be a small part of the plot and nothing more. A deeper look at Davy makes it seem like he's more than just a plot point. As it turns out, Davy is a foil to the main male character Jack Horner. Davy and Jack's personalities clash and highlight each character when compared. Davy being mute cannot speak to the other characters. When Davy first sees his foil, he “speaks rapidly in sign language” to Jack's cousin, Vi (191). This is Davy's means of communication. Jack, however, is the complete opposite of Davy being mute. Jack is a public speaker and is very passionate with his words. His choice of words demonstrates his feelings on the topics he talks about. An example of his passion is when he talks about the rally he is speaking at, Jack says “Saturday is the first anniversary of the signing of the damned Anglo-Irish Agreement. Every loyal man, woman and child must take to the streets to show the British Government that they will never defeat us. Never! Never! Never!" (198)Davy fails to demonstrate his passion for topics like Jack does. He can only manifest himself with his movements, he doesn't have the power...... middle of paper......ty. It is the smallest part of the whole country, it has its own disabilities that hold it back. It is disabled by violence and political conflict. Since Northern Ireland was separated from the Republic of Ireland it has been full of political violence different types of opinions had clashed and violence had resulted. It tore apart and paralyzed the North. It is as if Davy's disabilities paralyzed his mind as Jack's foil, he is part of Jack's plan to gain support for his cause and is a small symbol for the hardships and people of Northern Ireland. You can find meaning in even the smallest and most inconsequential characters in literature. Even if a character is labeled a tipper, there's always the possibility that he or she means more to the story than the reader initially realized.
