Seriously, I have only witnessed the sunset a few times in my existence. Though the explanation might take some time but allow me. Singapore: a tiny piece of land located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula. Having a population of around three million (yes, equal to the number of cows supplying us with milk in New Zealand, as highlighted in that famous milk advert), leaves us wondering about the sufficiency of living space for the growing nation. Adolf Hitler wanted living space for his fellow Germans, so that intelligent being solved the problem by sending troops to invade neighboring countries. Now, how would things go if the Singapore government applied the same tactics as the great dictator in conquering territorial space? Just imagine our National Service men being ordered to march into our neighbours, Malaysia and Indonesia, wearing their lovely patchy green uniforms and holding on to their M16s? Are you trying to invade them? Considering the fact that we even have problems purchasing water from Malaysians, forgive me for my ridiculous thoughts. Singapore is governed by a group of graduates, brainiacs with a mission to ensure a comfortable life for their fellow citizens. The sight of people wandering around like stray animals can be something that leaves a bad impression on foreigners on whom the country's economy depended a lot! Everyone must have a place to stay. Yes, townhouses, duplexes, villas and condos are available here. The smart ones invented the concept of HDB flats. HDB is our trusted housing development board. Just like the clothes we wear, HDB flats, skyscrapers come in all colours, shapes and sizes. Made affordable for the country's middle class, you can choose from 2 room, 3 room, 4 room, mansion, executive etc. As the population grows, the need to house more people has allowed these HDB flats to sprout up on every available plot of land like wild weeds, like it's nobody's business. When the flat lands are all used up, they will take the high lands. Our towns like Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang and Bukit Timah (where "Bukit" means hill in Malay), no longer have the identity that speaks to what they should have been. Because the smart-alecs had flattened the small hills to build these HDB flats! I deserved a spanking for being so compliant. Even though I myself am one of the many HDB flat dwellers, a few personal opinions don't do much harm, eh??
